High-redshift Gamma-ray Bursts from Population Iii Progenitors

چکیده
Detection of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from redshifts z ∼> 7 would open a new window into the earliest epoch of cosmic star formation. We construct separate star formation histories at high redshifts for normal (Pop I and II) stars, and for predominantly massive (Pop III) stars. Based on these separate histories, we predict the GRB redshift distribution to be observed by the Swift mission. Regardless of whether Pop III progenitors are able to trigger GRBs, we find that a fraction ∼ 10% of all bursts detected by Swift will originate at z ∼> 5. This baseline contribution is due to Pop I/II star formation which must have extended out to high redshifts in rare massive galaxies that were enriched by heavy elements earlier than the typical galaxies. In addition, we consider the possible contribution of Pop III progenitors to the observable GRB rate. Pop III stars are viable progenitors for long-duration GRBs which are triggered by the collapsar mechanism, as long as they can lose their outer envelope through mass transfer to a companion star in a close binary. We find that the likelihood of Pop III binaries to satisfy the conditions required by the collapsar mechanism could be enhanced significantly relative to Pop I/II binaries. If Pop III binaries are common, Swift will be the first observatory to probe Pop III star formation at redshifts z ∼> 7. On the Origin of the Highest Redshift Gamma-ray Bursts
GRB 080913 and GRB 090423 are the most distant gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) known to-date, with spectroscopically determined redshifts of z = 6.7 and z = 8.1, respectively. The detection of bursts at this early epoch of the Universe significantly constrains the nature of GRBs and their progenitors. We perform population synthesis studies of the formation and evolution of early stars, and calculate t...
متن کاملRed-shift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Progenitors
Gamma ray bursts have been divided into two classes, long-soft gamma ray burst and short-hard gamma ray burst according to the bimodal distribution in duration time. Due to the harder spectrum and the lack of afterglows of short-hard bursts in optical and radio observations, different progenitors for short-hard bursts and long-soft bursts have been suggested. Based on the X-ray afterglow observ...
متن کاملBinary Merger Progenitors for Gamma-ray Bursts and Hypernovae
The collapsar model, the now leading model for the engine behind gamma-ray bursts and hypernovae, requires that a star collapses to form a black hole surrounded by an accretion disk of high-angular momentum material. The current best theoretical stellar models, however, do not retain enough angular momentum in the core of the star to make a centrifugally supported disk. In this paper, we presen...

The detection of supernova features in the late spectra of several gamma-ray burst afterglows has shown that at least a fraction of long-duration gamma-ray bursts are associated to the final evolutionary stages of massive stars. Such direct observations are impossible for bursts located at redshift beyond z ∼ 0.5 and different methods must be used to understand the nature and properties of thei...
متن کاملShort gamma-ray bursts from SGR giant flares and neutron star mergers: two populations are better than one
There is increasing evidence of a local population of short duration Gamma-ray Bursts (sGRB), but it remains to be seen whether this is a separate population to higher redshift bursts. Here we choose plausible Luminosity Functions (LF) for both neutron star binary mergers and giant flares from Soft Gamma Repeaters (magnetars, SGR), and combined with theoretical and observed Galactic intrinsic r...
